Shingles rash is accompanied by pain at the rash site. The outbreak usually lasts about one month, and the pain usually subsides as the rash heals. But for some people, the shingles pain continues for months or years after rash has disappeared. Pain after shingles, also called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), is a chronic pain condition that affects the nerve fibers of the skin which are sometimes damaged during the shingles outbreak. It is the most common complication of shingles and affects thousands of men and women in the U.S. every year.
Patients with PHN often describe the pain as sharp, electric-like jabs, burning, throbbing, aching and intense skin sensitivity. Each patient may experience different degrees and types of pain. For some people, the pain is so severe that even the touch of clothing or a soft breeze can be painful.
